Hello, Readers! Clevenger here. I almost decided to write a blog about depression, and rant about things I’ve seen on the internets, and the struggles with progress and writing. BUT… I don’t want to do that. So instead, I’ve decided to pivot and give you all a deeper glimpse into the world of Sainan. Primarily.. magic.
Magic is woven into the very fabric of existence in the world of Sainan. I am thrilled to delve into the magic system that shapes our characters’ journeys and the world around them. In this post, we’ll explore the realms of magic and introduce you to some of the unique abilities of both “Learned Magi” and “Gifted Magi!”
Let’s begin.
So, out the gate, we need to understand that magic is divided into Arcane and Divine. Divine magic is a powerful force granted by the Gods of Sainan. It is bestowed upon individuals who provide devotion and faith to the gods and request favors be granted into the material realm. While Divine magic is revered and respected (mostly), it plays a more background role in “War of Night.”
Arcane magic, on the other hand, is the primary focus of “War of Night” and the series as a whole. This form of magic is harnessed through study, practice, and innate talent. Arcane magic is divided into different spheres, each representing a specific domain of magical influence.
Practitioners of the arcane arts can be divided even further into two primary groups. “Learned Magi” and “Gifted Magi.” “Learned Magi, like our protagonist Jesse and our mentor Zenesul, dedicate their lives to mastering the art of magic. Through rigorous study and disciplined practice, they can learn spells from any sphere of Arcane magic. However, their casting is bound by strict rules and structures, making their magic precise but somewhat rigid.
In “War of Night,” we follow Jesse, a Learned caster who trains under the guidance of Zenesul. Jesse’s journey is one of gaining discipline and personal growth, as he hones his skills and learns to navigate the complexities of Arcane magic and societal expectations. But Jesse isn’t a just spellcaster, he’s also a thief, constantly seeking ways to bend the rules and push the boundaries of his magical abilities. His dual life adds an extra layer of complexity to his character, as he balances the structured world of magic with the chaotic nature of his criminal endeavors.
Gifted Magi, like Symon, are a rare and unique breed. They possess an innate ability to access a limited sphere of Arcane magic, but their casting is inherently creative and flexible. Unlike their Learned counterparts, Gifted magicians are not bound by the same rigid rules, allowing them to innovate and improvise with their spells. Symon’s specific abilities are shrouded in mystery, adding an intriguing element to his character.
Symon’s journey in “War of Night” is one of self-discovery and moral dilemmas. As a Gifted magician, he navigates the delicate balance between the freedom of his innate magic, gaining understanding of Learned Arcana and its principles, and the potential consequences of its use. His unique perspective and abilities bring a fresh dynamic to the story, challenging the conventions of traditional magic and the Federation’s views on it.
The interplay between Jesse and Symon, we hope, creates a rich tapestry of perspectives within the narrative. On one hand, you have the rule bending, creative, and free-spirited Jesse trying to grow within the intricate and rigid field of Learned Arcana. On the other, the methodical, by-the-book, and meticulous mind of Symon who is desperately attempting to make sense of the chaos of natural spellcraft and it’s boundless possibilities.
The magic system in Sainan is a cornerstone of “War of Night” and “The Manticore’s Shadow” series. By exploring it’s facets, we delve into a world where magic is as diverse as the characters who wield it. As Jesse, Symon, and their allies confront the darkness that threatens Highston, and the Khorric Federation, their grasp of Arcane magic will be both their greatest strength and their most daunting challenge.
Stay tuned for more insights into the world of Sainan, character profiles, and exclusive sneak peeks as we continue to approach the release of “War of Night.” Join us on this magical journey, and discover the wonders and dangers that await in the shadows.

P.S. I’m excited to share a small excerpt of “War of Night” with a little scene regarding magic:
Symon stared again at the black cloth, intent on finding something. The seconds passed, but felt like an eternity as nothing happened. His hope faded, and he started to look up at Zenesul, when a glint at the edge of his vision caught his attention. A flower of light seemed to peek through the cloth, stretching to the beyond. He could see that connection again, similar to the man in the plaza. A sense of life and energy that led beyond the Veil. But it was more than a single thread. Each thread felt like an element he should know, but he could not explain them. He gasped in awe.
“Well, now,” Zenesul whispered. “That’s something.”
Symon took a deep breath. “What was that? What does that mean, Master Zenesul?”
“It means that your father was right. You should not be at the Academy.”
“So I should not learn magic?” Symon’s voice betrayed his disappointment.
“Oh, no. You should learn. You were right, as well.” Zenesul smiled. “You appear to have a Gift. A rare Gift indeed, if I am correct in my assumption. But the Academy is not the place for it.” Symon refused to believe that the Academy would not help him learn, but he held his words.
“Perhaps once you have a grasp on your Gift,” Zenesul gave Symon a wary glance, “other options will open for you. But for now, if you study with me, we’ll begin with the basics. We’ll cover theory, strengthening exercises, and foundational spell forms. Once you have the beginnings down, you can decide on your future with the Academy.”
